Excess gingival display is often known as a “gummy” smile. This can happen for a number of reasons but will ultimately result in “too much” gum tissue being displayed during a natural smile. This can also result in the teeth looking too small, when they’re really just being covered with gum tissue.
Procedures to Correct a Gummy Smile
Below are the procedures we use here at In Highlands Ranch Periodontics to correct the appearance of a gummy smile:
- Crown Lengthening – During a crown lengthening procedure, the excess gum tissue is removed as well as the excess underlying bone. This procedure is required when the shape of the underlying bone is what’s causing your gummy smile.
- Lip Repositioning – Lip repositioning is used to reposition the lip to a lower level in order to hide the excess gum tissue. Elongated upper jaws or a hypermobile lip can sometimes be the cause of a gummy smile and lip reposition will fix this.
- Gingivectomy – Lastly, this procedure removes the excess gums, uncovering the teeth and exposing their natural length. The new gum line is recontoured and your beautiful new smile is ready to show off.
